The World at my Feet

IS THIS WHY THE EARTH IS TRAPPED?

After completing the Ecological Footprint Quiz, I was quite shocked. My footprint was 8. I suppose it can't be all that bad. I was still below the city's average. I've always thought of myself as an environmentally friendly person but this test says that if everyone lived like me, I would need 4.4 PLANETS!!!

Now, I know that I can make many improvements, but I cannot completely blame myself for getting that result. Honestly, the test wasn't very helpful. The quiz asked many questions that I really can't help. I am still young, and I live in a household where I can't make all my decisions for myself. it's not like we can just sell our house and get a smaller one now can we? Same with our car. Though my family can drive less. Also, the test didn't ask about how many hours people spend watching TV and playing video games. Using electricity like that certainly contributes to the size of our Ecological Footprint. I for one, don't use the computer, play video games nor watch TV as often as many people. Think about how big our footprints would be if questions like that were included in the quiz!

From a household of only four people, we shouldn't be able to create THAT much damage to the Earth. I still believe that we are friendlier environmentally than many other familes and PERSONS EVEN!! Most of our points came from travelling and food. It's hard for us. Processed food is cheap and convenient. Travelling by car is faster and yes, my family and I love to travel to different places in the world.

After doing the test, I suppose I can do my part and create less damage to the Earth. I should eat less processed foods and travel less by car.

I definately agree with your post. Even though the amount of energy we consume is astonishingly high, we have grown accustom to a lifestyle where we are so heavily reliant on electronics and other technology that causes our Ecological Footprint to increase. It really is harder to deal with the situation since we are so young and are not the prime decision makers of our households. My parents are very old fashioned and seem very apathetic towards the idea of global warming and environmental concerns. Therefore, it is harder for our family as a whole to start working on our ecological footprint.
